American Idol Season Nine: Leftover Songbird Auditions

So I must admit to being distracted so far this season. I thought Dallas was the last audition, and then I though Denver was the last, and tonight was just a hodgepodge of locations and miscellaneous people pasted together.

So the Golden Ticket Collage Night winners were:

Amanda Shectman – very nice voice with a drab delivery. She needs coaching, but I think she will deliver eventually. The judges gave her a bad time for coming out of dramatic training – you mean like that Lambert guy?

Lee Dewyze – OK, Kris Allen wannabee. I didn’t hear anything special.

Crystal Bowersox – big voice, though anyone who sings Joplin automatically scares me – I just expect to hear nothing but throwback copycatting – maybe she’ll prove me wrong. Go ahead Crystal, prove me wrong.

Lacey Brown – a repeat from last year’s collection – has a childlike voice, but I don’t hear the power behind it.

Rachel Hubbard – She young and pretty and has a rich tone to her voice. I’m putting her on my top list, not entirely because of talent – but because I like her home town – Boerne, TX (say it with me “Bernie,” TX). No one said I have to be impartial…no wait, maybe I did.

Thaddeus Johnson – seems a bit more loud than talented to me.

Genesis Moore – Finally a real belter! In hope she shines in Hollywood.

Michael Lynche –Was a little off key in places, I didn’t hear it.

Didi Benami – Didi has a really great voice, the judges seemed a bit lukewarm – but I don’t know why. However, she may not be strong enough emotionally to handle the process.

Aaron Kelly – Big voice for a young man, some eye candy for the preteens, he delivers with emotion.

Hope Johnson – good voice, sweet, and her soul really shines through in her performance. Go Hope! FYI – Joe Jonas was the guest judge for her audition – he seemed a bit smitten.

Ryan says next week is Hollywood Week. Now can I say the painful audtions are finally over? Yeehaw!

American Idol 9: Denver Auditions Send 26 Through

American Idol Season Nine –Denver Auditions: 26 Through to Hollywood

It’s our last hope for this season’s contestants. So far we’ve seen what seems like a somewhat lackluster group; a few bright spots, but overall, not that impressive.

Victoria Beckham is the guest judge for both days of American Idol’s Denver Auditions.

Holders of the Goldenrod Passport:

Mark Labriola – very nice voice, control, cuddly cute guy with charisma. I would have been happy to hear him keep singing. Read more…

American Idol 9: Dallas Auditions: NPH and the Invisible Jonas Brother

Big D is known to have big talent. I hope we see some after the very disappointing showings so far in American Idol Season 9.

Day One:

Neil Patrick Harris judges.

Goldie Tickie Winnies:

Lloyd Thomas – Not wholly original but did a nice job with Stevie Wonder, which is always a challenge for AI singers. He has a good tone. Sang an elegant little run tio.

Kimberly Carver – big jazzy, bluesy voice, not too keen on her original song, but she won’t be singing that on Idol.

Erica Rhodes – Sings ok, has a crazy vibe, really not strong enough for Idol, but she used to sing with Barney the dinosaur so naturally she’s through – probably to visit the La Brea Tar Pits.

American Idol: Los Angeles Auditions – Katy Perry Tries out for Simon’s Cowell’s Job

Well I hope that all the talent that’s supposed to be wandering around LA, leaves their tanning booths, Coffee Bean & Tea Leafs, and dog psychics behind to contribute to the slim pickings that is Idol seasaon nine.

Day One – Avril Lavigne is the guest Judge.

Golden Ticket Winners:

Jim Ranger – Sang a reasonably nice original song, voice is OK, but of the limited bar band variety.

Mary Powers – A so, so rocker. ZZZZZZ. Do we need several of these every year? What would an Idol season be without bad covers of Pat Benatar, Janis Joplin and Heart.

Wow, this was a pretty pitiful showing and Avril Lavigne added nothing to the audition process. I think some stars (and I use that term lightly with Lavigne – who to my mind hasn’t exactly proved her depth of talent or staying power) find it very difficult to focus on anyone else for an extended period of time. American Idol:Orlando Auditions: “Holy S*%t,” the Splits, and Handcuffs

American Idol heads to Orlando for auditions this week. After the train wreck that was Chicago, I’m hoping a trip down south will restore my shaky confidence in this season. So far the contestants have mostly been so-so and the regular and guest judges a bore. Kristin Chenoweth is a powerhouse talent, and a wit. If she can’t help the situation – there’s a problem.

Seth Rollins – very smooth voice, sincere delivery, has a deep rich quality to his voice; takes on classic Gershwin and does it right.

Jermaine Purifoy – very nice, natural voice with no strain. Seems to have a peace inside him that comes through with his singing.

American Idol: Chicago Auditions

Shania Twain joins the judging panel of American Idol’s Chicago Auditions. I’m not sure why Shania is the choice for Chicago – apparently Oprah was busy. In a super cheesy opener, Idol attempted to connect the hope of their show’s contestants with Barack Obama’s historic victory. Idol occasionally gets a bit to big for their collective britches.

So who got a golden ticket from the Chicago auditions?

Idol in Atlanta

If I was auditioning tonight I would be intimidated. Mary J. Blige is a judge and she has the goods. She’s proven herself in every conceivable way. I imagine she doesn’t suffer fools lightly.

FYI, I won’t be reporting on the people who humiliate themselves. For two reasons: first off, I respect the fact that they had the backbone to try out at all, and second, so many are clearly borderline developmentally disabled, or unstable, you’d have to be, well, Simon, to enjoy mocking them.

Idol in Beantown – Round One Auditions

Before Idol begins I have this feeling – I don’t want it to start – because right now, no one’s dreams have been crushed by Simon, or wilted by their exposure to public scrutiny. Right now everyone can be the next American Idol. It’s a nice feeling. I also have a bit of dread. Will Adam Lambert’s success bring in Lambert wannabees? He’s so singular, so unique, I’m afraid his clones will be tragic. If you’re going to play the glam card and the Goth card, and be outrageous, you better be able to back it up with a Lambert-quality vocal.

Boston has an amazing folk and singer-songwriter scene – but will those people show up for American Idol auditions? Night one’s special judge is Victoria Beckham – at least she is a former singer – better than some.

It’s raining in Boston and the hopefuls are ready to sing… Read more…

American Idol Countdown

I’m getting excited about American Idol Season Nine! It’s hard to imagine today, that in a few months I will be obsessed with the outcome of American Idol, have a favorite performer, and if history is any indication, I’ll be disappointed when they don’t win.  Is there any way to avoid this syndrome? Nope! I’m hooked. I look forward to sharing the experience with you, and if you don’t mind, I’ll need you to talk me down from the occasional ledge. Much obliged.

Adam Lambert’s Sales Success Reveals a Dirty Little Secret

Adam Lambert’s sales success in 2009 reveals a dirty little secret: hate doesn’t sell CD’s. Despite Kris Allen’s Idol victory, Lambert’s CD outsold his (in pre-sales) before anyone had ever even heard it. Where were all of the American Idol voters, who were allegedly so passionate about Allen, in the pre-sale battle? Where are they now? As 2009 draws to a close, they are still missing in large numbers.

It’s likely most never existed in the first place. Read more…
